6/13/2023 0 Comments Seedlings falling overWhen you notice the leaves on the first few plants start to fall over, stop watering and leave the onions in the ground for 7 to 14 days (depending on how dry or humid your climate is) to allow them to finish maturing. Secret #2: Stop watering your onion crop before harvest. Another consequence is a fungal infection, which can infect damaged onion plants. Once rot has taken hold, you cannot salvage your onion plants. The onion bulb and roots will rot if the plant cannot completely dry out. Overwatering your onions could result in rotten bulbs or poor harvests. Feed your onions lots of nitrogen to increase bulb size. To give your bulbs a head start, start them indoors six weeks before your last frost date. Onions need all the time they can get to mature. To give your onions a chance at growing to their full size potential, you need to give them adequate time to develop. Begin hardening off in a sheltered location for a few hours on the first day, increase a little each day, until the seedlings are outside overnight. Hardening off is the process of adapting plants to the outside so they can adjust to sunlight, cool nights, and less frequent watering. You’ll end up with smaller bulbs shaped similar to torpedos because the soil will restrict the plants from bulbing properly. If you’ve planted the onions too deep, you may not be able to tell when the bulbing process begins as the onion is too deep in the ground. What happens if you plant onions too deep? Ideal onion water needs are to irrigate to a depth of an inch (2.5 cm.) once a week rather than a light sprinkling each day. Onions need a lot of water, but the soil should never get soggy. When the plants reach 5” tall, use scissors to trim them back to 2” as this will encourage them to grow thicker and stronger (and the onion trimmings are delicious in sandwiches & soups!) About two weeks before planting, you can begin hardening off your onion starts by moving them outside each day. You may be experiencing underwatering or overwatering, as well as excessive heat. However, size isn’t the sole reason onion seedlings appear droopy. Why Does My Seedling Keep Falling Over? Onion seedlings will naturally fall over, especially when they reach a size where they can no longer support themselves. Begin by carefully overturning the seedlings onto your hand. When onion greens are 5 to 6 inches tall, it’s time to transplant them into individual cells. How big should onion seedlings be before transplanting? The first application should be about three weeks after planting and then continue with applications every 2 to 3 weeks. A nitrogen-based fertilizer (ammonium sulfate or ammonium nitrate) should be applied at the rate of one cup per twenty feet of row. Onions require a high source of nitrogen. Which fertilizer is best for onion seedlings? In a typical 12 week growing season, we recommend irrigating with one inch of water once or twice a week depending on the amount of rainfall received. Stick your finger into the ground near the plants if you can’t feel moisture up to your first knuckle, it’s time to water. How often should I water my onion seedlings? Onion germination is fastest as 68-77☏ (20-25☌), with slight temperature drops at night. The tops of my florescent plant lights are flat, and they give off just the right amount of bottom heat needed to help onion seeds germinate quickly. How do you make onion seedlings grow faster? Stop watering once the leaves start yellowing – this means that the bulbs are starting to swell.Remove any flowerspikes as soon as they appear.Hoeing between rows risks damaging foliage and bulb tips, so weed by hand where possible.
